Apple Volcanoes!!

KRCS 1st Grade Classes took their science lesson outside.

Supplies per student: 1 cored apple, one small cup of baking soda, one small cup of vinegar all on a tray for easy cleanup.

Mrs. Dickey and Mrs. Judges' students started the lesson with their hypotheses. They had to predict what would happen to the apple after they filled it with baking soda and vinegar. They also drew a picture to help explain their predictions. Then taking turns, they poured the baking soda into the cored apple. Next came the vinegar. They could hear the fizzling; they saw the white foam bubbling. More importantly, our first-grade students created an interactive project to reinforce and conclude their volcano lesson.

All the volcanoes began to foam, the area was filled with fascination and glee. You heard the students saying, "WOW look, it's a volcano!"

Their excitement as the foam-filled and then spilled over the top of the apple was thrilling. Another excellent example of hands-on learning at KRCS.
