Rooms are changing and so is the learning at KRCS Lower School.  All by taking out the teacher’s desk.  You read that correctly, two of our teachers removed their desks to give more room for independent learning.

Reading lounge in place of the teacher's desk.

Mrs. Marcus in 4th grade removed her desk, by doing this she created a bean bag lounge by her reading library.  Here the students can collaboratively work on centers, exchange strategies, or relax in bean bags while reading their novels.  Ms. Marcus said, “I wanted our students to have flexible seating instead of just sitting at their desks.”

How to remove hearing "I can't see"

Mrs. Price in 3rd  grade took out her desk and moved in a collaborative table.   Now she can help students in a small group setting, or the students can meet for projects and exchange ideas without disrupting others in the class.

Why sit when you can stand

In a short period of time, both classrooms reported that the environment is more relaxed, better controlled, and the students have become more independent.
