What is your superhero power- I love to read!

Parent volunteers turned our lobby into our own Superhero Headquarters

How do we get our students excited about reading? We will do whatever it takes! Our KRCS Book Fair is no typical run of the mill book fair. Media Specialist Sue Borain, along with parent volunteers, have transformed our school lobby into a superhero-themed arena. We have Spiderman perched on a second-floor spider web, protecting the floor below. We have Clark Kent's telephone booth ready for him to change into his Superman suit, faster than a speeding bullet.

Door decorating contest

Each class has decorated their door to carry the theme down the halls. Next week, we will wrap up the Book Fair with a parade. Students will come to school dressed as a book character or reflecting a scene from the book the class has read. The Lower School will invite our Upper and Middle school students, parents, staff, and grandparents to line our street as the entire Lower School parades through the grounds.

We take pride in helping our students recognize their reading level throughout the year. Our teachers cycle through many book levels with each of their students. They explain why a book level might be too easy, too difficult, or the perfect level at this time for the student. They tell each student how they are expanding their skills, reading faster, and comprehending what they have read. Going through several levels with each student in one on one reviews, helping the students identify books that they will enjoy, understand, and feel slightly challenged by, the KRCS teachers are instilling a love for reading in our students. KRCS teaches these skills so students can find that perfect read in libraries, book stores, or book fairs. The Book Fair is just one example of how we excite our students about books and how to find a "perfect read."
